The War for Licenses: Girls und Panzer Nabbed By Sentai & Crunchy

Written by

Anime streaming titan Crunchyroll announced yesterday that they will be simulcasting Girls und Panzer starting October 10th. This came on the heels of an announcement last weekend by Sentai Filmworks in which they had acquired both digital and home video distribution rights to the series.

Girls und Panzer follows the story transfer student Miho, who has just enrolled at Ourai Girl's Academy. The academy has a "senshadou" (tank combat) course where students learn to drive real tanks and compete against each other in teams.

The series is being directed by Tsutomu Mizushima (Squid Girl, Another) with 3D CGI by Graphinica who is known for their 3D work on Manwaru Penguindrum and the second season of Strike Witches. Script supervision will be performed by K-ON!'s Reiko Yoshida and orginal charachter designs are being done by Humikane Shimada of Strike Witches and Sky Girls fame.

The move to scoop up what could potentially be a lucrative license is not all that unexpected considering the rising popularity of moé meets military series. The staff roll already heavily suggests what direction the series will be headed in but only time will tell for sure. You can check out the trailer for the series below.
